Four years ago, for the first time, we heard about the concept of using sound for mobile phone charging. The researchers said that through the piezoelectric effect, nanowires made of zinc oxide can convert sound-induced vibrations into electrical energy. But at the time, the researchers could not generate enough current to actually answer the phone. Now, researchers from the University of London's Queen Mary Institute (QMUL) and Nokia have successfully implemented this technology.
Like previous teams, researchers at Nokia and QMUL also use zinc oxide materials, which they use to make tiny nanosheets. This piezoelectric material generates a certain current when subjected to mechanical stress, and the acoustic wave is the applied force. Scientists began using liquid zinc oxide coatings to process plastic sheets. The plate is then placed in a chemical and heated to 90[deg.] C., which causes the zinc oxide to grow into an array of nanorods. In order to obtain the generated voltage, they place the nanosheet between two electrical contacts, which are usually made of gold. In order to cut costs, researchers use ordinary aluminum foil instead of gold.
The prototype of the energy harvesting device is similar in size to Nokia's cell phone and can generate up to 5 volts using everyday background noise such as traffic, music, and so on. This is enough to support mobile phone charging needs, while the previous team generated 50 millivolts.
"It's an exciting concept to be able to make mobile devices work longer, or to completely remove batteries, using only stray sound energy," said QMUL's Dr. Joe Briscoe. "We hope this technology will be used in real life."
