Four simple steps to extend UPS life

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) batteries are typically used for 3 to 5 years. Life expectancy depends on several factors, including usage (the number of times the device must be in battery-powered mode) and other environmental factors. Here are some guidelines for ensuring that your equipment achieves the best expected life:

1. Make sure your UPS is placed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location. Ideally, the temperature at which the UPS is placed should be no higher than 24 degrees Celsius. At the same time, for ventilation purposes, leave approximately 1 to 2 inches of space on each side for air circulation.

2. Perform 1 or 2 UPS runtime calibrations only once a year if necessary. Sometimes you can perform runtime calibration to verify that your run time is sufficient. However, frequent execution of runtime calibration reduces the life expectancy of the battery.

3. Do not store the battery for an extended period of time. The new battery can be stored for 6-12 months. After this time, you should use the battery as soon as possible, otherwise you will lose a lot of power stored. It is not recommended to store used batteries.

4. Do not exceed 80% of the rated capacity of the UPS equipment as this will result in reduced runtime. As the load increases, the runtime will decrease accordingly. If the power supply is not available, the full-load UPS will quickly drain and release its battery, which will reduce the battery life expectancy. Note: To ensure longer battery life, do not connect the laser printer to the UPS's spare battery outlet. Make sure the laser printer uses a “surge only” outlet (use the appropriate model). For UPSs that do not have a “surge only” outlet, it is recommended to connect the laser printer to a separate surge suppressor.
