Wan Fu's "Native" Dalian training base for guide dogs in China believes that there are many reasons for the incompatibility between the two. The key is that people generally lack awareness of guide dogs.

"Wanfu is not imaginatively capable"

Fu Minghui was diagnosed with blind vision impairment in 2001. At present, the eyes can only feel the glare. At the beginning of August this year, a guide dog charity auction held in Guangzhou made Fu Minghui, a professor at Sun Yat-Sen University, join the guide dog Wan Fu. Wan Fu has been here for more than a month. His work performance has left Fu Minghui unable to conceal his inner loss. In the afternoon of October 11, Fu Minghui took Wan Fu to train. On the way, Wan Fu's “funny” and “gluttonous” personality was revealed. On his way home, Wan Fu not only did not follow the established route but returned to his hometown. The destination wanders around the campus of the University of China. Although Fu Minghui scolded it several times along the way, Wan Fu was like a stubborn child and he walked in the opposite direction. Cheng Wanfu and Fu Minghui took a large circle around the campus before returning home.

"Sometimes when we come to the dining hall and smell the scent, it is unwilling to leave; it's very sensible to eat in the canteen, but as soon as we walk away, it will steal food..." Fu Minghui laughed helplessly.

In general, guide dogs can remember 7 routes. However, the current Wanfu can only remember two routes, and often make mistakes. "I was going to the office. Halfway through it, I found something wrong, I asked people, sometimes I talked to the library and I sometimes went to the big clock tower."

Hit shopping problems have encountered problems

The misunderstanding brought about by society's unfamiliarity with guide dogs has also become an obstacle to Wan Fu's travel.

On the evening of October 9th, Fu Minghui took Wan Fu to the Dongfeng Hotel to participate in an activity. At night, the family returned and wanted to take a taxi home. Unexpectedly, he repeatedly bumped into the wall. “The first taxi driver told us not to pull the dog. The second driver said that he was afraid that Million would lose hair. Then she met a lady who had a golden retriever at home and she contacted us. The familiar driver, but the driver did not work; we later called a taxi. Fortunately, the driver had a dog at home and we were able to get a taxi."

In addition to being stopped by a taxi, Wan Fu was also stopped outside the gates of Yuexiu Park, Beijing Tianhe City and Tianhe City Sports Center. “These public places generally stipulate that dogs cannot be brought in. However, it is a blank space to allow guide dogs to enter. Afterwards, they have to go through a series of twists and turns to enter.”

The psychological effect is greater than the guidance

In this regard, its “Naijia”—the Chinese training base for guide dogs in Dalian has always been very concerned. The base director assistant You Fangqiu told reporters that in general, after 20 days of running-in period, Wan Fu and Fu Minghui still need to adapt for at least 3 months. In this adaptation period, guide dogs themselves need to adapt to the weather in the south. There will indeed be some dissonances between the change and the owner. But what is important is that the owner must have a correct understanding of the guide dog. “In fact, the psychological effects given by the guide dog to the owner are much greater than its actual leading role. The blind need to travel, but they need independence. They do not want to rely on it. Others, guide dogs can give them psychological support and life sustenance. If guide dogs are simply used as a way to guide them and rely too much on their abilities, it will certainly produce a certain gap."

The director of the base, Wang Jingyu, mentioned that Fu Minghui’s directional walking ability is relatively poor, which also restricts the tacit understanding between him and Wan Fu. “Professor Fu’s achievement in what he needs to do is to participate in some training courses on directional walking ability.”

Guangzhou or will build guide dog base

There are 16.91 million visually impaired people in China, and currently there are less than 50 guide dogs serving in the mainland. Some media have reported that more than 100,000 people have been queued for the application list of the Dalian Guide Dog Base. Since the base has to investigate the applicants, the admission time is very long.

Wang Jingyu told reporters that in September this year, the Guangdong Lions Club visited the base of guide dogs in Dalian. “After seeing relevant personnel, they feel good and feel that they can also engage in one in Guangzhou.” Wang Jingyu revealed that the current preliminary concept is The Chinese guide dog Dalian training base provides resources such as talents and dogs, and the Lions club provides venues. However, due to the relative lack of trainers, this talent delivery cannot be long-term, so we must pay attention to localization training.
