The main goal of the joint project is to achieve a significant weight reduction effect for a 1.60-meter-long rear axle beam. At present, the standard of the vehicle structure is the steel beam structure. They are used in air spring suspension bags that support the body weight. Each rear axle has two air spring brackets, each weighing 83 kg. The load bearing structure of the air spring bracket weighs about 53 kg. The prototype of this support structure will lose 70% weight, thereby increasing the passenger car's load. With the further development of prototypes, the capabilities of the components must be verified in a rigorous road-running experiment. In addition, the economic efficiency of the components will also be evaluated.
At the same time, the main purpose of the project is to develop a technology that can produce such parts on a large scale. The production process is highly automated: with the assistance of a radial weaving machine, carbon fibers are organized around a core. Several robots jointly pull the core of the assembly through the radial weaving machine from the correct angle. The epoxy injection process is also fully automated. This ensures that every component has the same high quality.
