Frankfurt Airport Fire Service Rescue Vehicle Equipped with Allison Transmission

In October, the Frankfurt Airport opened a fourth airstrip in the northwest corner, which expanded the runway area at Germany’s largest airport to 220 acres. In order to increase the emergency infrastructure, Frankfurt Airport has also built a new fire station and expanded the airport fire brigade. The airport purchased six FLFZ8XXL rescue vehicles from Albert Ziegler GmbH & Co. KG, of which two were already in place. The two rescue vehicles were equipped with two Mercedes-Benz OM502 (Euro 5) V8 diesel engines and the power was as high as 1,030 kilowatts (1,400 horsepower); and two Allison 4800 models with built-in retarder were installed in the car respectively. The seven-speed automatic gearbox makes it possible to weigh 49 tons of vehicles in 21 seconds, the speed from 80 to 80 km/hour, and a top speed of 135 km/hour. At present, the two rescue vehicles have been on standby at the aircraft runway and are handling emergencies outside the airport.

According to ICAO's strict rules, airport fire trucks must quickly reach anywhere in the runway system, from alarms to the use of fire-extinguishing equipment, for a maximum of three minutes. Since turning acceleration is of the utmost importance, two Allison 4800 transmissions must be used in the powertrain of a fire engine. The Allison Transmission's torque converter and power continuous shifting ensure maximum vehicle acceleration. The variable speed output from the two power sources is combined through a composite module and transmitted through the gearbox to the four axles. Allison's regional distributor Diesel-undGetriebeservice GmbH is responsible for the integration of Allison transmissions.

Rudolf Moses of the Technical and Cost Management Department of the Frankfurt Airport Fire Brigade said: "In an emergency, we must be on top of each other. Therefore, rapid acceleration is an essential feature of our fleet, and this function is only available in fully automatic transmissions. There is also an important advantage: it allows drivers to hold the steering wheel with both hands, concentrates on driving, and won't be distracted by shifting gears. In this way, the driving safety of the vehicle during large-scale operations can be greatly improved."

Fraport AG had previously tendered in the European Union to replace its old rescue vehicle and expand its convoy. FLFZ8XXL won the bid. So far, airport emergency services have used five Luxembourg Simba fire engines, each with two Allison 4800 gearboxes. The transmission system of the FLFZ8XXL is provided by TitanSpezialfahrzeuge GmbH and the body is fitted by Ziegler. Such a special vehicle costs about 1.6 million euros.

Two FLFZ8XXL rescue trucks have already arrived at the airport and several others will be put into operation in the coming months.
