At the unprecedented 62nd International Commercial Vehicles Show in Hanover (IAA), Cummins Inc. of the United States adorned with its five major series of engine products and key engine components. As the largest independent diesel engine supplier in North America, Cummins has received special attention from European audiences.
With a full range of products and mature technologies, Cummins has successfully secured a place in the strong European market. According to the reporter's rough statistics at the exhibition site, at least 10 companies including Duff, Nissan, BMC, OCOKAR, TEMSA, SOLARIS, SOLBUS, VDL, Volkswagen, and Scania were included. Dozens of display vehicles from European commercial vehicle manufacturers are equipped with Cummins engines. In addition, all of the exhibitors of Xiamen Jinlong, the only Chinese bus company that participated in the Hanover show, are also equipped with Cummins engines. At the booths of these auto companies, the models equipped with Cummins engines have also become the targets of European customers' competition.
Calmly deal with Euro V standards
After the Hanover Motor Show, from October onwards, the European Union will implement the Euro V emission regulations for new vehicles. In the process of upgrading from Europe IV to Europe V, European commercial vehicle companies also faced the problem of the choice of technology routes. According to the reporter's knowledge, Scania and MAN still use the EGR technology route in the European market, while companies such as Duff, Renault, and Cummins have adopted the SCR technology route.
Steve Nendick, European market communications manager at Cummins, told reporters that from Euro IV to Euro V, engines with SCR technology are relatively easy, requiring only partial adjustment of parts and parameters. Engines with EGR technology need to be performed on pipelines. Redesign. However, considering the inheritance of the technical path and the already formed customer base, the host plant that has already selected EGR can further meet the Euro V standard on the basis of EGR.
"These two technical routes are not a problem for Cummins," said Steve Nendick. As an independent engine supplier, Cummins can provide engines that use both EGR and SCR technologies. It can be said that the two technical routes to the engine market are open to Cummins users.
Cummins has prepared a number of products that have met or even exceeded the Euro V emission standards. Among the engines participating in the exhibition, the Cummins ISL-G series 8.9-litre EPA2010 natural gas engine can be said to be the biggest highlight of all exhibits. It adopts a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and a three-way catalytic system to achieve EEV (European enhanced version is environmentally friendly. Vehicle emission standards, between Euro V and Euro VI) and EPA 2010 (American Heavy Diesel Engine Exhaust Regulations, equivalent to Euro VI), with a maximum power of 320 hp (239 kW) and a maximum torque of 1356 Nm.
At the same time, the Cummins ISLe series 8.9-liter Euro V all-electronically controlled diesel engine also exhibited a high-pressure common-rail fuel system and a selective catalytic reduction system, which can meet Euro V emission standards, with a maximum power of 400 hp (298 kW) and a maximum torque of 1700 cows. ?Meter.
The newly upgraded Cummins ISBe series 4.5-liter and 6.7-liter Euro V all-electrically controlled diesel engine adopts a high-pressure common-rail fuel system and a selective catalytic reduction system to meet Euro V and EEV emission standards. Due to its mature technology and strong applicability, this series of engines has already been used in more than 70,000 units in Europe. At the same time, it has also been widely used in China, India, Brazil, the Middle East, Africa, and Russia, which can meet the diversified power needs of Euro III, Euro IV, and Euro V vehicles.
Among the Cummins full range of engine products, the ISF series 2.8L and 3.8L diesel engines were unveiled for the first time and were one of Cummins's main products. The two engines will be produced at Beijing Foton Cummins Corporation next year, with a target annual production capacity of 400,000 units.
The on-site staff introduced that these two products are based on the proven Cummins B series engine platform and are applicable to light trucks, VANs, pickup trucks, SUVs, and MPV utility vehicles. The current emissions meet Euro III and Euro IV standards and can easily be upgraded to Euro V.
Both fully and exclusively occupy every market segment
The reporter saw at the exhibition site that many European mainstream commercial vehicle OEMs have their own vertical supporting systems and assembled their own R&D engines. As an outsider, it is not easy for Cummins to get a share of the European engine market.
In this regard, SteveNendick admitted to reporters: “Vertical support has gradually formed a trend, and this phenomenon is particularly common in Europe.†But he said that as an independent engine supplier, Cummins has the advantage of having more professional technical advantages. And broader product coverage.
Steve Nendick analyzed that with the gradual breakdown of the commercial vehicle market, engine demand will become less and more refined. Compared with the cost of OEMs investing in developing and producing different types of engines, Cummins has demonstrated its technical and cost advantages. Cummins can be an exclusive supplier of a certain family of engines to a customer.
In the North American market, where heavy-duty truck OEMs also tend to provide vertical support and emission regulations are more stringent, Cummins has gradually achieved success in the past two years. According to the statistics of WardsAuto, Cummins ranked first in market share in 2007 (37%), leading Caterpillar in second place by 18%; in the first four months of 2008, the share was as high as 44%.
Steve Nendick believes that Cummins's success lies in the timely grasp of the characteristics of the market, and for the European market, Cummins also timely understanding of the European local emissions regulatory requirements and development trends, do a good job of advance technology research and development and reserves for the continuous and effective service of Cummins products European markets do a good job in basic work.
“Furthermore, service is another advantage for us based on the European market. In Europe, Cummins has a mature way of information feedback. Cummins's after-sales service network is convenient and effective. It can provide good consultation and service for every Cummins engine.â€
