BASF has filed lawsuits with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) and the District Court of Wilmington, Delaware, alleging that Belgium's Umicore has infringed on its two lithium battery patents.
According to documents submitted to the court by BASF, Umicore is currently selling lithium battery technology and lithium metal oxide cathode materials in the United States, which were developed by the University of Chicago Argonne laboratory and Exclusively granted to BASF in 2009.
BASF said that Umicore’s infringement has caused the company’s billions of dollars in economic losses and weakened its competitiveness as a supplier of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in 2016 and 2017.
In addition, Umicore has threatened to sue a customer who is considering replacing a beautiful lithium battery with a BASF lithium battery, and BASF has also filed a complaint.
In a letter to Reuters, Umicore said that BASF’s allegations were insufficient and that the company had hired Fish & Richardson PC to defend its legality of lithium battery technology.
To date, BASF has invested millions of euros in battery technology and battery materials to meet the demand for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
