Air bearings
Air bearings (also called air bearing) refer to plain bearings that use gas (usually air, but possibly other gases) as a lubricant. Air has lower viscosity than oil, high temperature resistance, and no pollution. Therefore, it can be used in high-speed machines, instruments, and radioactive devices, but its load capacity is lower than that of oil. Air bearings are divided into three major categories: air hydrostatic bearings, air dynamic pressure bearings and extrusion film bearings. In general industry, aerostatic bearings are used more widely.

Application
Based on the intrinsic properties of air (low viscosity and small changes in temperature, radiation resistance, etc.), air bearings show unique advantages in high-speed, low-friction, high-temperature, low-temperature, and radiation applications. Such technologies as high-speed grinding heads, high-speed centrifugal separators, gyroscopic instruments, compressors for cooling reactors, high-speed blowers, and computer memory devices have overcome the difficulties that cannot be solved by using air bearings because of the use of air bearings.
