U.S. University develops high efficiency solar cells

Researchers at the University of Delaware have produced solar cell modules with a conversion efficiency of 36.1%. According to the conversion efficiency of various types of photovoltaic cells collected on Progress in Photovoltaics, it is perhaps the most efficient photoelectric conversion battery. This conversion efficiency has been recognized by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL, Golden, Colo.).

The team assembled a set of lens systems, dichroic mirrors and two dual panels to make the solar module. The group consists of Dr. Allen Barnett of the School of Electronics and Computer Engineering and his three students, Xiaoting Wang, Nick Waite and Paola Murcia. In addition, the University of Delaware, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and some researchers at Arizona State University are also involved. The conceptual design of this battery module was proposed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) ultra-efficient solar cell and module program.

According to Dr. Barnett, the University of Delaware battery module is the only American university to be awarded in the Progress in Photovoltaics index. This index lists this component of the University of Delaware as the best concentrating battery and panel. Students at the University of Delaware personally designed, built, and assembled the panel and worked with NREL to debug and modify the draft test protocol. Government, universities, and industrial companies are involved in optical design, solar cells, and module assembly.
