However, Skoda’s sales performance in China in the first quarter was relatively poor, with a year-on-year decline of over 10%.
In March, Skoda's global delivery volume was 108,500 units, a year-on-year increase of 2.1%, the highest monthly sales in its 122-year history. In the first three months of this year, Skoda's global cumulative sales volume was 283,500 units, up 2.5% year-on-year from 276,600 units in the same period last year, also setting a new high in the first quarter.
Sales growth in various regions of Europe declined in China
From a regional perspective, Skoda had excellent sales performance in Europe last month. In Western Europe, Skoda delivered 53,600 new cars in March, up 7.9% year-on-year. In the first quarter of this year, Skoda Western Europe's cumulative sales increased by 6.6% year-on-year to 122,600 units from 115,000 units in the same period last year. In its largest European market in Germany, Skoda sold 17,100 units last month, up 4.5% from March last year. In the first quarter, Skoda Germany sold 40,800 units, up 4.9% year-on-year. In the first quarter of this year, Skoda was in Italy (6,700, a year-on-year increase of 20.9%), Austria (6,200, a year-on-year increase of 19.1%), Sweden (4,000, a year-on-year increase of 13.4%) and France (6,200, a year-on-year increase). 10.6%) achieved double-digit growth.
In Central Europe, Skoda's sales in March increased by 14.5% year-on-year to 18,900 units. In March, Skoda also achieved double-digit growth in Poland, Hungary and Slovakia in the region.
In Eastern Europe, which excludes Russia, Skoda sold 3,300 units in March, up 9.0% from 3,000 units in March last year. In terms of sales in the first quarter, Skoda's cumulative sales in the region were 8,500 units, a year-on-year increase of 14.2%. Among them, Ukraine's first quarter sales surged 114.7% to 1,200 units.
In Russia, despite the continued tough market environment, Skoda's sales in March still increased slightly, from 0.74 in March 2016 to 0.7% to 4,900 units. In the first quarter, Skoda’s sales in the country rose 1.9% year-on-year to 12,700 units.
Compared with other regions, Skoda's performance in China, its largest market in the world, is relatively unsatisfactory. In March of this year, Skoda sold 21,800 vehicles in China, down 14.8% from 25,600 vehicles in March last year. In the first quarter, the brand's cumulative sales in China was 66,800, down 11.4% year-on-year. Skoda said that the double-digit decline in sales in China was mainly due to the increase in taxes in several auto market segments. According to Skoda, its sales in China will return to normal in the second quarter.
Octavia VISION E will debut at the Shanghai Auto Show
From the perspective of the model, the sales of Skoda Speed, Hao Rui and Jing Rui greatly promoted the overall sales of the brand. As the flagship model of the brand, the sales of the first quarter increased by 18.9% to 38,300 units. The Skoda Haorui series sold 51,800 units worldwide in the first quarter, up 6.8% year-on-year. In the first quarter, Jingrui’s global sales climbed 10% year-on-year to 54,600 units. Among all brands, YETI's global sales in the first quarter fell by 20%, but the new model will be on display in mid-May. Skoda said that due to the launch of newer models, Octavia's global sales in the first quarter did not unexpectedly decline. At present, Kodiak is slowly launching around the world, and the global sales of these models have reached 4,700 units.
At the upcoming 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, Skoda's new pure electric concept car VISION E will be unveiled and announced the brand's plan for future personal travel business. VISION E is positioned as a four-door coupe sports SUV with a maximum range of up to 500 kilometers of pure electric power, enabling level 3 autopilot.
