Hybrid fuel system first installed marine engineering ship

On March 21, it was learned from the Norwegian Classification Society ( DNV) that the new hybrid fuel system currently under development will be installed on the offshore engineering supply vessel “Viking Lady”. After the completion of the new system, the operation of the ship's engine will be smoother, and energy efficiency will be improved to further reduce emissions. The project will be completed in 2013.
It is understood that Viking Lady is different from other offshore engineering supply vessels. This 3-year-old LNG fuel ship is owned by Eidesvik Offshore, the world's first commercial vessel with a fuel cell as part of the propulsion system. In the fall of 2009, Viking Lady successfully installed a 330 kW power fuel cell power system and has successfully operated more than 18,500 hours. Based on this, Viking Lady has become one of the most environmentally friendly ships in the world. The ship will now take further steps to reduce ship emissions. Once the battery pack is installed, the Viking Lady will be powered by a hybrid fuel system, just like a hybrid fuel-powered car that has been around for years. Moreover, compared to cars, ships may reduce more emissions and have a shorter return on investment.
DNV led the research project called FellowSHIP. Other participants in the project include shipowner Eidesvik Offshore and ship power supplier Wärtsilä. The potential benefit of a hybrid fuel system for the Viking Lady is that its engine and fuel cell work more smoothly and efficiently, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20% to 30%, and even reducing the amount of fuel. Exhaust gas emissions. The shipping industry is currently facing high fuel cost pressures. Based on these actual costs, the return on investment of hybrid fuel systems is expected to be less than 2 years.
Next, DNV will conduct a comprehensive test to verify the benefits of the project in terms of emissions and cost savings. The hybrid fuel system will also model the details, and the calibrated and validated process model will benefit future hybrid fuel systems. Simulation and optimization. At the same time, DNV developed the class specification for battery-powered ships, which is the world's first classification specification for the use of batteries as part of the ship's propulsion power, including hybrid fuel solutions and pure battery-powered ships.
