Recently, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. announced that it has reached a supply agreement for rice husk ash silica with Yihai Grain and Oil Industry Co., Ltd. This year Goodyear will use this type of silica in passenger car tires produced at the Puland store in China and sold in the Chinese market.
For the past two years, Goodyear has been researching and testing silica extracted from rice husk ash at the Akron Innovation Technology Center and found that its impact on tire performance is comparable to that obtained by conventional methods.
Mr. Richard J. Kramer, Chairman and CEO of Goodyear Global, said: “Sustainability is the cornerstone of Goodyear's innovative philosophy. This new silica has many environmental advantages: It greatly reduces waste transported to landfills, reduces production energy consumption, and helps improve tire fuel efficiency."
According to the statistics of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the annual harvest of rice is more than 700 million tons, and the treatment of rice husks becomes an environmental problem. Typically, rice husks are incinerated for power generation to reduce waste transported to landfills. Although the conversion of rice husk ash to silica has been achieved for many years, only the silica extracted during the latest conversion process has reached a high standard for adequate tire use.
Silica is used as a reinforcing agent for tire tread composites. Compared to conventional tire reinforcements, carbon black, silica reduces the rolling resistance of the tire, while lower rolling resistance helps to improve the vehicle's Fuel efficiency. In addition, it can effectively improve the wet grip performance of the tires, allowing the driver to enjoy superior control while adding a sense of security.
