Weichai Power: Choosing High Pressure Common Rail Selection

On July 3, 2008, the 20,000th engine of Weichai Power Blue Engine III was put on the market. On the same day, the company announced the successful development of the National V engine.

Weichai Power is China's largest auto parts enterprise group and its engines make up 40% of the heavy truck engine market. Its every move affects the entire industry. The news released on July 3 means that the products developed by Weichai based on high-pressure common rail technology have entered the mature stage of the market.

Even in 2008, the debate on high-pressure common rail and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation system) technology was still in the industry. Using EGR technology, the engine price will be a few thousand dollars cheaper, but the high-pressure common rail engine has a lower fuel consumption, cleaner tail gas emissions, and more comfortable operation. It is a technological trend in the future of China and the global market. In 2008, Weichai Power took the lead of a new technology and the posture of defenders to face the pressure from competitors and questioned the market.

As early as 1995, Weichai invested technical force to research and demonstrate the principle of the high pressure common rail of the engine that was still a fresh concept at that time. At that time, the international high-pressure common rail was still in the theoretical stage, and the commercialization prospect was not clear. Weichai Power's exploration in chaos has also shaken. Until 2003, the technology had a substantial breakthrough in R&D. Weichai thus started the Blue-Rock project and took the first step in the qualitative change of the engine.

In March 2005, Weichai Power owns the independent intellectual property rights of the Blue Engine Euro III diesel engine. In the following years, Lan Qing completed prototype performance tests, emission tests, combustion development tests, fuel economy tests, durability tests, vehicle match tests, and three-high tests. In November 2006, it passed the project acceptance of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Weichai made preparations for the promulgation of the National III standard. Also in 2005, Weichai's rival China National Heavy Duty Truck Corporation began to study the State III technology. It took a year and a half to develop the EGR technology diesel engine.

EGR is the name of an exhaust gas recirculation system. It essentially does not have a breakthrough in engine technology. It only uses secondary combustion of exhaust gas on the basis of the original and reduces exhaust emissions. The advantage in saving fuel consumption is not obvious. The equalization of high-pressure common rail injection pressure can greatly reduce the variation of diesel engine oil supply pressure as the engine speed changes. This solves the problem of heavy engine low-speed combustion in the past, prone to black smoke, and high failure rate.

In order to ensure the smooth development of Lanqing R&D, Weichai Power invested over RMB 100 million and set up a European R&D center with Austrian AVL Company to send more than 30 project teams to participate in product R&D. Through international cooperation in research and development, Weichai Power has cultivated its own technical strength.

In 2008, the average monthly sales of the Lanqing engine reached 15,000 units, far higher than the competitors. Domestic tests show that a heavy-duty vehicle equipped with a Blue-Euro III engine can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 50% and reduce overall pollution by 40% compared to a heavy-duty vehicle equipped with a Euro II engine. At the same time, fuel consumption can be reduced by 5% to 10%. According to the latest supporting test data, the engine's fuel consumption per 100 kilometers is 20.91 liters, which is 9 liters lower than that of similar foreign models. Calculated at 100,000 kilometers per vehicle per year, fuel savings for five years is equivalent to saving a heavy truck. And its exhaust brake design makes the braking force of the entire vehicle increase by more than 70%, which can well solve the problem of brake failure when the heavy-duty vehicle goes downhill.

"Using high-pressure common rail can easily upgrade from State III to State IV and State V, and EGR cannot be upgraded." Professional analysts said, "Because of the low price of EGR, the performance in the market was good last year, so many of the original R & D The high-pressure common rail companies have a wait-and-see attitude that directly affects the upgrading process of China's engines. However, Weichai chose to insist that the entire industry has been arguing endlessly, and the high-pressure common-rail market has been greatly occupied by EGR.
