Mercury abatement drives global demand for bromine

Israeli media recently reported that demand for bromine will increase in the next few years as international restrictions on mercury emissions are further strengthened. It is estimated that by 2015, the bromine used for mercury emission reduction will reach 150,000 tons, which is equivalent to 15% to 20% of the world's total production capacity, and will drive market annual sales to increase by 400 million to 500 million US dollars.
At present, there are about 6,000 tons of mercury emissions in the world each year, of which 1/3 is released by coal-fired power plants. More than 20 states have passed legislation requiring coal-fired power plants to reduce mercury emissions by 90%. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will also submit a revised bill to reduce mercury emissions and impose more stringent requirements on mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants at the federal legal level.
According to the Syrieh Chemical Group, 70% to 80% of the mercury emission reduction technologies that have been successfully developed in coal-fired power plants use bromine-based compounds to remove mercury, and the MERQUEL series recently launched by the Ministry of Industrial Products is based on bromine. Mercury products can be used in a wide range of mercury removal technologies.
